The Russian Pavel Kulizhnikov wins the second 500m race in Calgary with a new world record time of 34.00sec. Although he didn’t succeed to beat the barrier of 34sec – he ran 3 hundredths faster as the since 2007 existing world record of the Canadian Jeremy Wotherspoon. The 2nd and 3rd places went to William Dutton and Alex Boisvert-Lacroix from Canada. Nico Ihle was disqualified.
The world record hunt goes on even on the third and last day of the first World Cupin Calgary. Yesterday the US American Brittany Bowe was beaten by her teammate and lost the skated record over 500m. But today the order on the podium over 1500m was another one. Brittany Bowe won in new world record time of 1:51.59min before Heather Richardson-Bergsma and the Czech Martina Sáblíková.
Since this season, the team sprint has became an official part of the ISU skate program. Now, during the first World Cup of this season 2015/16 in Calgary, the first unofficial world records have been established. For men, the Netherlands won in a time of 1: 18.79min ahead of the US and Russia. The ladies competition won the Japanese women in 1:26.82min ahead of China and Canada. A German team did not started. Currently, the ISU doesn’t list world records for the team sprint.
On the second day of the first World Cup in Calgary Heather Richardson-Bergsma and Brittany Bowe (both USA) skated a new world record on the 1,000m. That’s a perfect start into the season. At first Bowe has improved the record in 1.12,54 minutes. But in the next race Richardson improved the record again in 1.12,51 minutes. Third place went to Chinese Hong Zhang (CHN) in 1.12,65 minutes. The Germans Gabriele Hirschbichler skated on rank 14 and Roxanne Dufter on rank 16.
In the course of a change in the contract there is still no agreement between the DESG and the 19-times World championship winner and Olympic champion Gunda Niemann-Stirnemann. Several medias have cited a statement of DESG president Gerd Heinze to the dpa: “There is no couch position in Erfurt for Gunda.[…]”. The financial insecurity doesn’t authorizes the DESG to guarantee her a permanent position more than to the year 2018.
Patrick Beckert has established a new German national record over 3000m during the Time Trials in Calgary. In a time of 3.37,31 minutes he stayed 2.4 seconds behind the old record, that he had also established in February 2015 in Calgary.
During this weekend at the German Single Distance Championships 2016 the first German athletes solved their tickets to participate in the World Cup of the current season: Gabriele Hirschbichler (1000m), Claudia Pechstein, Stephanie Beckert and Bente Kraus (3000m), Nico Ihle, Joel Dufter and Hubert Hirschbichler (1000m) and Patrick Beckert (5000m).
The SID has just announced that Jenny Wolf starts a new speed skating coaching career. The 36-year-old women from Berlin and former 500m world record holder began her education in Inzell. “I have seen after the Olympics in Sochi that the Association will change. I wanted to be a part of it and contribute something”, Jenny Wolf told the SID.Jenny’s choice to Inzell has been made after her husband became a job in the Bavarian region.
