After 50 years in the Olympic history it was the first time that there has been again only one nation on the podium. Gold, silver and bronze medals went to the Netherlands. Sven Kramer won with an Olympic record (6.10,76 minutes) ahead of Jan Blokhuijsen and Jorrit Bergsma. The German skaters took places 8 (Patrick Beckert), 10 (Moritz Geisreiter) and 21 (Alexej Baumgartner).

The German skaters present in good mode, during a test competition on before the Olympic Games in Sochi. Nico Ihle has won the 500m in 35.02 sec. Judith Hesse covered rank 4. Even when the top stars were not at the start, it might be a good sign.

An Australian skater won a medal at a Sprint Championships for the first time. Daniel Greig is ranked 3 behind Michel Mulder (NED) and Shani Davis (USA). In the women’s Jing Yu (CHN) won ahead of Hong Zhang (CHN) and Heather Richardson (USA). Denise Roth was the best German at rank 15.
As expected Michel Mulder is in front of Shani Davis (USA) und William Dutton (CAN) after the first two races. The two German Denis Dressel and Denny Ihle occupy the ranks 22 and 25.
After the first day Jing Yu (CHN) is in front of Margot Boer (NED) und Hong Zhang (CHN). Denise Roth is on rang 15 and Jennifer Plate on rang 17. All Ladies will be allowed to skate the fourth distance (2. race 1000m).
Tomorrow starts the Sprint World Championships in Nagano, Japan. The German skaters – Jennifer Plate, Denise Roth, Denny Ihle and Denis Dressel – will go for an Olympic ticket. But the favorites are Heather Richardson (USA) and Michel Mulder (NED).
Jan Blokhuijsen from the Netherlands wins after sovereign victories over the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters the European Championships in Hamar . With this victory he also highlights his ambitions for the Olympics.
